Sound Bombardment activities develop children’s awareness of speech sounds by highlighting the same sound at the beginning of lots of different words.
These activities are helpful for children who change or miss out speech sounds in their words.
You can choose a ‘theme sound’ (e.g. ‘b’, ‘m’, ‘s’, ‘f’) for a few days or a week before changing to a new sound.
Find lots of things from around your home that start with that sound. For example, for the ‘b’ sound: ball, book, banana, bear (teddy bear), boat (toy!), boot, box.
The items can be put in a box, pillowcase or hidden around the room for your child to find.
Name the items for your child, highlighting the sound at the beginning of the word, for example: “book! That starts with the ‘b’ sound. ‘b’ for book!”
It is important to say the sounds and not the letter names,
for example: a short ‘b’ sound (not ‘be’), a long ‘mmm’ sound (not ‘muh’ or ‘em’).
It doesn’t matter if your child still changes or misses out some of the sounds in their versions of the words, the aim is for them to hear the sound at the beginning of lots of different words.
These activities are demonstrated in our Sound Bombardment video.
