Hip Back and Pelvic Girdle Pain

Pregnancy Related Pain and Dysfunction

During pregnancy, 1 in 5 women experience discomfort in their pelvis and hips
(Pelvic Girdle Pain or PGP), approximately 49% of women experience back pain, and approximately 62% of women experience symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or wrist pain and numbness.

As part of the Women’s Health Department, there are qualified Physiotherapists able to deal with such problems associated with pregnancy. Your Midwife, GP or Consultant can refer you for a triage Physiotherapy appointment if your symptoms are affecting your ability to complete everyday activities.

If you have back or pelvic pain, please download an advice booklet and try the exercises, whilst you are waiting for your appointment.

At the triage session, you will be briefly assessed and then may be asked to attend four antenatal exercise classes, four hydrotherapy classes or for further assessment. All classes are designed to be attended alongside daily home exercises in order to reduce your symptoms and improve your strength and fitness, helping you to cope with everyday life.

The triage sessions run every Wednesday afternoon between 1pm-3pm and we will aim to book you onto the next available session. We are currently dealing with a large volume of referrals and you may therefore have to wait several weeks to be seen.
