Occupational Therapy within Community Mental Health Teams

Community Mental Health Teams support people with severe and enduring mental health problems living in the community.

These teams include Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Mental Health Nurses, Support Workers and more.

Group of adults

Occupational Therapy is offered in all Community Mental Health Teams within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

What is the role of Occupational Therapists in the Community Mental Health Team?

We aim to:

  • support your health and recovery
  • offer a local service
  • work with you based on the support you need
  • offer specialised assessment to find out what help you need
  • use a range of occupational therapy interventions to help you do what you need to do and explore meaningful activities
  • support your vocational needs and grow your community networks.

Referrals
You can access the service if your GP or responsible clinician thinks a referral would support your care. Referrals to the service can only be made with your consent. You can re-refer yourself to this service if you have been open to a team within the last three years.

If you are already open to a community mental health team and feel that you may need support from an Occupational Therapist you can discuss this with the team member/s you have contact with and request an assessment.
