Wales Mobility and Driving Assessment Service

The aim of assessment is to evaluate the physical and cognitive ability of the individual to drive a motor vehicle in safety and comfort. For drivers who have a physical disability, our centre has a wide range of adapted vehicles to suit the individual’s specific requirements. For drivers who experience changes of cognitive function, our expert team are able to offer evaluation of cognitive function required for safe driving.

In order to have a full driving assessment you must be in possession of a current driving licence and be able to read a standard vehicle number plate at a distance of 20 metres. You must not have had an epileptic seizure or blackout within the preceding 12 month period.

Referrals

We accept referrals for patients registered with a GP in Wales. You can refer yourself by phoning the centre or completing the application form on the website. Referrals are also taken from the DVLA or Motablity.

How to Refer

A copy of our referral form can be downloaded from our website or contact the office and a printed version will be sent to you.

Assessment

The team will complete a comprehensive assessment including an in-car assessment and provide expert advice and information. The assessment will also include an evaluation of your physical, cognitive and visual abilities required for driving. At the end of the assessment the advisor will discuss the outcome. A written report will be sent to you in the post.

Passenger and carer assessments can also be carried out for people with access difficulties. The assessment explores safe transfers and travelling needs, vehicle suitability, equipment and stowage.

Drive from wheelchair assessment can also be arranged. Your own powered wheelchair must be suitably crash tested.
