Staff you might meet in critical care

There are lots of different people working in critical care. Here is a short description of some of the members of staff you are most likely to see during your stay on critical care.  You may therefore come across a member of staff whose job role is not outlined below. If you are unsure of who someone is, please ask for them to explain who they are and how they will support you or your loved one during your/their critical care stay.

Specialist Medical Team

Experienced consultants who diagnose and treat critically ill patients. They lead on the overall care of patients and have a team of Doctors and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners who support them.

Nurses

Help look after your day to day care needs and are around all day and night. Each nurse may be caring for one or two critically ill people at a time, depending on your needs.

Health Care Support Workers

Help the nurses to look after you.

Technicians

Experienced Nurses and Practitioners with a background in the Operating Department who assist with procedures, perform patient transfers and keep our equipment safe.

Pharmacy Staff

Work with the medical and nursing team to optimise medication safety, use and supply.

Physiotherapists (Physio)

Help you maintain and regain your strength and mobility. They will also assess your breathing and help clear secretions off your chest.

Occupational Therapists (OT)

Help with your daily routine and with getting back to doing activities that matter to you.  They can support you to overcome or adapt to any changes from your illness or injury.

Speech and Language Therapists (SALT)

Help people with communication and swallowing difficulties. They can support you to overcome or adapt to these difficulties.

Dietitians

Help you get the right amount of nutrition, at the right time and in the right way, to help you get better.

Clinical Psychologist

Being in Critical Care is a difficult time. They can offer you and those important to you some emotional support.

Rehabilitation Assistants

Support the therapy team in caring for you and helping you meet your goals.
