Immunisation: Preventable illness and disease

Preventing illness by means of vaccine immunisation is vitally important for everyone. It helps maintain your health, and the health of everyone around you. It is also important to maintain children’s and any young persons’ vaccinations.

All individuals with the following long term health conditions require additional immunisation to help ensure preventable illness does make their condition worse, or add complications:

  • Cardiovascular conditions
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • Those who have a BMI over 40

People who are immunosuppressed due to disease or treatment, including patients undergoing chemotherapy, those who have asplenia or splenic dysfunction, and those in the groups highlighted above, should also ensure they have been protected against Pneumonia and have received the appropriate immunisation. People between 70 and 80 years of age should also have a Shingles Vaccine.

Flu Vaccine

Young and adult carers

It is important for young and adult carers to ensure they are appropriately immunised in order to protect themselves and those they care for. The seasonal flu vaccine is available free of charge to all those who undertake a caring role. Immunisation can be obtained from your GP or pharmacies that participate in the NHS scheme.

Young carers should check with their GP to ensure their immunisations, especially MMR and MenACWY, are up to date.
