Do you feel in control of decisions about your treatment?

Since the diagnosis of cancer, you may find you are having to make many difficult decisions such as how to involve family or friends, care arrangements for dependents, work arrangements and managing finances. Making decisions about your treatment
can feel stressful.

In order to make an informed decision, you will need to understand your diagnosis, the treatments available, the range of possible side effects and the time scale for making the decision. It is important not to feel rushed when making important decisions. You may find it helpful to take time to think about your decision and weigh up the pros and cons of your treatment options.

Being assertive can help you feel in control when there may be many things that feel out of your control. Letting others know what you need from them can help you get your needs met. If you have any unanswered questions, it is important to pose your questions to the health professionals involved in your care. Ask any questions you may have about the social impact of treatment such as financial implications as you can be signposted or
referred for support.

Sometimes it can be helpful to seek support from family and friends when making important decisions. However, some people find it easier to speak to someone neutral. If this is the case, ask a healthcare professional involved in your care whether you can be referred for support in making a treatment decision.

Remember, it is your treatment and your decision.
