Clearing your chest

At times you may find you have excess secretions on your chest, or that you are finding it difficult to clear your phlegm. Chest clearance techniques are designed to move phlegm from the deep parts of your lungs to the centre, where you will find it easier to clear.

There are many techniques to clear phlegm including breathing exercises, positioning, mechanical aids and improving airway hydration. Many of these techniques need to be taught by a specialist physiotherapist, however the Active Cycle of Breathing technique (ACBT) described in the video below, is the simplest and often most effective way of clearing your chest.
